In the Craft Room: Renaissance Faire
A Weekly Newsletter on Handmade Cosplays/Costumes and Accessories
Hello there! Welcome to the first edition of In the Craft Room. This week I will be focusing on several costumes revolving the theme: Renaissance Faire. The Renaissance season is winding down in my area, so I thought it was the perfect time to highlight some of this week’s handcrafted costumes.
Half-Elf Barbarian Druid

This costume is very unique to UnholiedLeaves. She created a costume based off of her Dungeons & Dragons character. She describe her character as, “…a half-elf (full werewolf) Ancestral Guardian Barbarian + Circle of the Moon Druid.”
She briefly describes her process highlighting how she created a green gradient on her skirt with paint, and she also dyed her wig herself using rubbing alcohol and paint. It is neat to see the final result and how she conceptualized it into a physical costume. This costume is definitely worth the look, and it is great inspiration for anyone newly entering the Ren Faire scene!
Florian Fairy Corset

Next, we have a fairy corset…an accessory to risingmoon’s fairy costume. If you were wondering how to go about making a corset this short video shows a quick summary of her process, and it can give you an idea of how much work goes in to it. The fabric she chose stands out to me because it really looks like the bark of a tree…reminding me of the Florian subrace of faries from Dungeons & Dragons.
A small critique for this corset is that I would add more leaves and flowers around the top and bottom. Currently, I think it looks a little sparse, but she may have more in plan for it. Other than that the stitching looks great, and I am looking forward to seeing the final outfit!
Verdant Pirate Hat

In this video Sunset Dragon created a tutorial to show us how she created her homemade pirate hat. She is very resourceful and thrifted the hat she used as a base. This is a great she was to give an old accessories a new life! Her video is very thorough and it shows how quick and simple the process is.
The end result is an extravagant pirate hat that looked like it costed more than it actually did. This was a great way to save money when costuming can become expensive. If you were going to follow this tutorial and you are looking for cheaper fabric, many craft stores will sell fabric remnants at discounted prices.
Medieval Armor Showcase

This video created by Miscreations.US showcases some of his handcrafted pieces that he will be selling at the FanX Comic Convention. He is an incredible metalsmith and leather worker, and this video highlights it.
I cannot imagine how much time he put into these pieces. These medieval accessories work great with many different types of characters, and just look great! This showcase can be a great inspiration for what pieces you may want to create or purchase for your own costume.
Fashionable Last-Minute Fairy

I greatly enjoyed watching this video. It was a lot of fun to see Taylor’s problem solving skills when it came to this costume. She needed a costume for a Renaissance Fair she was attending the next day.
This video shows us problems we may encounter ourselves when creating a costume last minute, so it was interesting to see her work through the process. Her goal in this video was to create a flower petal skirt for her fairy costume. It took a good amount of trial and error, but by the end she created a gorgeous flower petal skirt!
